Monte Orfano<\/h1>\n\t<\/div> [vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1790142486208{padding-top: 50px !important;}”]Monte Orfano is a Pre-Alpine elevation located on the southwestern edge of the Franciacorta region, spanning the territories of the municipalities of Coccaglio, Cologne, Erbusco, and Rovato.<\/p>\n
Viewed from above, it has an elongated shape and stands isolated from other hilly terrain\u2014a characteristic to which it owes its name, *Orfano* (“Orphan”).<\/p>\n
The Monte Orfano conglomerate formation is the only elevation of marine origin dating back to the Miocene epoch within the Po Valley area. Sandstone beds are visible in some areas, while marly strata lie at a depth of 20 to 30 meters.<\/p>\n
A distinctive feature is the “red earth” (*terra rossa*); this indicates the presence of calcareous soils and arises from a combination of clay elements and iron oxide. The area’s abundant water resources and fertile soil were harnessed and organized to reach their full potential under Benedictine and Cluniac monasticism, a period when the morainic agricultural lands and the adjacent plains were divided into farmsteads.
